Tell Them…

March 24, 2010

How many times have you opened up the Quraan in search of something, not quite sure what, just an unease in the heart usually…and just found your answer right there…Whatever page you turn to, you’ll find an answer to something…

Surat Al-Hijr, verse 49: Announce, (O Muhammad) unto My slaves that verily I am the Forgiving, the Merciful

SubhanaAllah, this verse is just so powerful…The verses before it, the location of it, the verses after it…it all adds to the effect. The Quraan is just a beauty. A wonder. An amazing and astonishing revelation. It’s a miracle. It really is.

The thing is though, the first word in the verse, Nabbi’ نبئ is just SO powerful. It’s not just…”tell them”…it has a lot of other understood meanings with it. A Naba’ نبأ in Arabic is something huge. Kind of like, The News! Like…”You didn’t know?!!” kind of news.. Or, “Did you hear?” …And because it is in an order to the Prophet peace be upon him to tell us that, to announce to us that piece of news, that GREAT news…it just adds to the power of the verse in a magical sort of way. A miraculous way. This verse is especially powerful because it comes after the description of satan, hellfire, and heaven. …So after you have been told about how satan didn’t bow down to Adam when he was created, you’re then told about how he asks to lead people astray…and that kind of sets off your mind thinking how it’s so true, how he really has been leading man astray all along in infinite ways….Then a mention of hellfire comes. And what a perfect position for it to be mentioned. After that, a mention of heaven…You start to feel at ease, making duaa you’re amongst those lucky ones…Then, the news is announced. God orders prophet Muhammad peace be upon him to announce to us, to let us know, that He is THE Forgiving, THE Merciful. And that clears the way for you. Kind of makes you think: “You want heaven? This is the way”. It shows you the way and provides you with the assurance and motivation and focus that is needed to attain Allah’s forgiveness and mercy.

Here’s a translation of some of the verses:

26. We created man from sounding clay, from mud moulded into shape;
27. And the Jinn race, We had created before, from the fire of a scorching wind.
28. Behold! thy Lord said to the angels: “I am about to create man, from sounding clay from mud moulded into shape;
29. “When I have fashioned him (in due proportion) and breathed into him of My spirit, fall ye down in obeisance unto him.”
30. So the angels prostrated themselves, all of them together:
31. Not so Iblis: he refused to be among those who prostrated themselves.
32. (Allah) said: “O Iblis! what is your reason for not being among those who prostrated themselves?”
33. (Iblis) said: “I am not one to prostrate myself to man, whom Thou didst create from sounding clay, from mud moulded into shape.”
34. (Allah) said: “Then get thee out from here; for thou art rejected, accursed.
35. “And the curse shall be on thee till the day of Judgment.”
36. (Iblis) said: “O my Lord! give me then respite till the Day the (dead) are raised.”
37. (Allah) said: “Respite is granted thee
38. “Till the Day of the Time appointed.”
39. (Iblis) said: “O my Lord! because Thou hast put me in the wrong, I will make (wrong) fair-seeming to them on the earth, and I willput them all in the wrong,-
40. “Except Thy servants among them, sincere and purified (by Thy Grace).”
41. (Allah) said: “This (way of My sincere servants) is indeed a way that leads straight to Me.
42. “For over My servants no authority shalt thou have, except such as put themselves in the wrong and follow thee.”
43. And verily, Hell is the promised abode for them all!
44. To it are seven gates: for each of those gates is a (special) class (of sinners) assigned.
45. The righteous (will be) amid gardens and fountains (of clear-flowing water).
46. (Their greeting will be): “Enter ye here in peace and security.”
47. And We shall remove from their hearts any lurking sense of injury: (they will be) brothers (joyfully) facing each other on thrones (ofdignity).
48. There no sense of fatigue shall touch them, nor shall they (ever) be asked to leave.
49. Tell My servants that I am indeed the Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful;
50. And that My Penalty will be indeed the most grievous Penalty.

And from among his signs…

Agenda for Change

February 20, 2009

 Al-Hujurat (The Chambers)

Chapter 49: Verse 15

Agenda for Change
“Believers are those who (truly) believe in Allah and His messenger, then doubt not, but who strive with their possessions and their selves in the way of Allah; it is they who are the truthful ones.”

Significant change cannot be effected solely through preaching and delivering sermons. These have a very limited and temporary effect on an audience and societal powers. The influences of society, or the dominant culture, are so huge that they very quickly wash away any effects produced by the preaching. Thus,change agents additionally require a clear practical agenda for change, backed up by sincere devotion, firm resolve and commitment, a spirit of sacrifice, and an investment of time, energy, and resources.

The kind of actions that a movement can engage in will naturally vary according to the social and political circumstances. For instance, if a people are oppressed by their governments, then armed struggle cannot be ruled out. Conversely, in peaceful conditions, actions can incorporate communication, dialogue and exerting social and political pressure.

In the light of Islamic guidance, actions for positive change should lead to a greater good and not to a worsening of the situation. If taking certain actions, no matter how crucial or effective they may be considered, leads to panic and confusion, or creates social upheavals that may give rise to more evil, then they must be avoided and patience exercised until condition change. This is because Islam aims to bring about peace and order not chaos; its aim is to reform, improve and develop a society, to remove wrongs and corruption rather than punish the wicked or create disorder on earth.

Al-Shams (The Sun)

Chapter 91: Verse 10

“And he fails who corrupts it.”

Corrupted Soul…

The Arabic word al-khaibah has many aspects to it, including:

1) weakness in one’s soul, as the soul does not have the strength and courage to follow what it knows is the truth;

2) hesitation and confusion as every time it wants to do good, the soul drags it back down and fights it;

3) true psychological humiliation as he is worshipping something that has no benefit to it and it is not worthy of a human being to be worshipping something of that nature;

4) cowardice and stinginess as his soul knows that he is disobeying his Lord and he cannot look forward to anything positive; hence, he has to hang on to his life and everything that he possesses in the strongest fashion;

5) loss of modesty and dignity as his soul drives him to do shameless acts to the point that he accepts them, supports them and loses all shame concerning them.

This is all part of the reality that happens to him in this world. And that is all much less than the disgrace that he will face in the Hereafter.

The Sun

December 5, 2008

I have recently fallen in love with Surat AshShams…and I have been meaning to write about it…and then, subhanaAllah, as always, the weekly reminder from Sh. Muhammad Al-Shareef arrived in my inbox with an excerpt from surat AshShams!! SubhanaAllah!! It happens everytime! Those emails arrive at the perfect time for the perfect state I am in!!

Undoubtedly, the one who purifies (their soul) has succeeded /
And the one who soiled (their soul) has certainly failed.
– Surat AshShams 92/9-10

[Lessons from this Verse]
What’s the goal in life? Is it just to collect materialistic
toys? Or is it .. to purify our souls? Yes.

We know that that is the right answer, but truthfully, what are
you doing about it? What more can you do, today!

For the next seven days, ask yourself daily, “What more can I do
today to purify my soul even more?”

With best wishes to see you succeed at the highest level!
– Muhammad Alshareef

This is not me writing about surat AshShams though…that post will come later inshaAllah 🙂

P.S. to get the email reminders:

Breach of Covenant – Tafseer Surat Albaqarah

November 2, 2008

The battle was raging wrong…
Musaylimah’s forces ripped through the ranks of the Companions…
They would not lose…
they could not lose…
a simple rock…
a podium for honor and truth, so it shall be…
The Liar would not win, could not, Ammar ibn Yasser would not allow it…
Certainty filled his lungs… the call of criterion… division between the believers and the Liar…

Hidden Depths…

September 27, 2008

I read this in more than one place these past few days and thought it was amazing subhanaAllah…

 Imam al-Razi stated, “Allah concealed this night like He did with many things: He concealed His pleasure with acts of obedience so one will strive towards them all, the answer to supplications so one will work towards making every supplication matter, His greatest name so people will magnify all of His names, His acceptance of repentance so one will repent for every sin, the time of one’s death so one will use his entire life for worship and he hide this night so people will worship Him every night [from the last 10 nights of Ramadan].”

Prophetic Psychology…

September 26, 2008

I got this in an email and thought it was too amazing not to share…

Replacing Bad Habits
Completely eliminating a habit is more challenging than replacing it with a more productive habit. Moreover, it’s crucial to replace the lost natural needs, such as the need to socialize and to be entertained with something healthy.
For instance, it’s easier to replace or balance your addiction to TV with a physical workout or reading, than to suddenly remove the TV from your life.

Interestingly, Prophet Muhammad, the greatest ‘psychologist’ of humanity, illustrated this principle in these words:
“Fear Allah wherever you may be; follow up an evil deed with a good one which will wipe (the former) out, and behave good-naturedly towards people.” [At-Tirmidhi]

Blind Spot: Weeping During Recitation

It is an attribute of those with profound knowledge of God, and a distinguishing feature of God’s righteous devotees. God Most High said, They fall down upon their faces weeping, and it increases them in humility (Quran 17: 109).

Many hadiths and accounts from the Righteous Forebears have been related concerning this. Among them is from the Prophet, peace be upon him, himself: “Read the Quran and weep. If you do not weep, cause yourself to weep.” [Ibn Majah]

Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, prayed the Morning Prayer in congregation and read Surat Yusuf. He wept until his tears flowed over his collarbone.
Imam Abu Hamid al-Ghazali said, “Weeping is recommended while reciting [the Quran] or witnessing [its recitation].” He said, “The way to achieve this is by bringing sadness to mind by pondering the threats and warnings, the covenants and agreements that it contains, and then contemplating one’s shortcomings with their regard. If this does not bring to mind sadness and weeping, as it does with elite worshippers, then one should weep from the lack of it, since it is among the greatest of calamities.” [Ihy Ulum al-Din]

And for those who know arabic, check this out:  البكاء من خشية الله : أسبابه ، وموانعه ، وطرق تحصيله

What hit me most is: “cause yourself to weep”!!…Sometimes, we find it really difficult to get to this level of khushoo3, and this is one of the ways the Prophet peace be upon him taught us to get to that level…

Causing ourselves to weep automatically puts us in the proper position as ‘abeed to Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala…and we realize the need we have for Him azza wa jal…

May Allah our sins be forgiven this month inshaAllah..

Surat Qaaf…

Their time, Our time…

September 21, 2008

Have you ever wished you were born at the time of the Prophet peace be upon him?

Have you wondered how difficult or easy it must have been for the Arabs to believe in him salla Allahu alahi wassalam?

You know, while we might be deprived of seeing the Prophet peace be upon him, we do have an advantage!

SubhanaAllah, Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala is TRULY FAIR!

You know why?? Ponder of this…

During the time of the Prophet, miracles such as the israa’ and mi3raaj were unimaginable and unrealistic to the Arabs. How can a man possibly be elevated to the highest of skies, visit a land far away, and come back all within one night?? To them, it must have been difficult to comprehend. For us however, it is something VERY possible! Anyone who’s been on an airplane can attest to the high possibility of such a miracle…

This also applies to many of the Quraanic miracles such as the verses where Allah azza wa jal tells us of embryology and astronomy. To the Arabs, it probably made no sense to them when they learned about the sun and the moon having their own paths that they travel along in the skies…It was probably very difficult for them to understand the formation of a fetus in the womb and the development stages…Heck even think of the simplest examples: being created from water and mud…Any science student will tell you that one of the first things they memorized is that water is a MUST for life…and that the necessary ingredients for life as they say are probably found in “mud”…One can go on forever…

So you see, while we might not have the Prophet peace be upon him with us, we do understand many of the miracles presented to us in the Quraan…and that leads to another miracle within itself: the fact that these facts were mentioned over 1400 years ago and we are just learning them now!

Also, it brings me to shame to think of how fast they accepted the miracles (companions radiya Allahu anhum) and how strongly and firmly they held to the truth, regardless of what was realistic to them or beyond their knowledge and understanding…And they sacrificed their lives for it.

May Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala grant us the company of His messenger and the companions in jannah inshaAllah. Ameen..

Wassalamu Alaikum…
